In this part of the presentation, you will learn how the safe pedestrian crossings work and what the main advantages of this technology are.

What does a safe pedestrian crossing mean?
Here is a brief description for those customers who are not familiar with “safe pedestrian crossings”:

It is a visual, i.e., luminous, highlighting of the crossing path (lighting of a part of the crossing with an asymmetric light) and additional signalization equipment (flashing LED lights integrated into the road).

What is the main advantage of our system?
The main advantage of this system is that the (flashing) signalization lights notify drivers of pedestrian presence only if the pedestrian is on the crossing or within its vicinity.

The main difference is the technology engaged and system settings – read carefully!

Many pedestrian crossings in Slovakia are lighted and many of them signalize something at certain periods of time, however, the efficiency and the security of all traffic participants are often disregarded.

The lighting of pedestrian crossings provided by PROGRES MT s.r.o. mainly uses asymmetric lights that eliminate sideway light emissions. This prevents the light reflection phenomenon in the direction of coming vehicles. The PROGRES MT s.r.o. company only uses special lights that provide suppression of sideway light emissions („ZEBRA LIGHT/ ARDOS“). The construction of these devices is entirely different from standard lights. Moreover, we can also provide lights with a built-in IP6 road sign at the side which is also illuminated.

It is quite common that pedestrian crossing lighting provided by other vendors utilize standard street lamps. These do emit enough light, but also create unpleasant and dangerous light reflections in the direction of coming vehicles. In such case, drivers may not be able to see the crossing area. This is particularly a problem on wet roads and at night.

„LEVELITE/ARDOS“ system (LED lights built into the road surface) is designed to emit flashes strong enough to be visible during daytime.
Flashes coming from LED lights are visible throughout the day and night. The direction of the flash is horizontal so that it does not blind the driver coming into the area of the crossing.
Without this feature, other systems are inferior as they do not provide pedestrian protection at daytime.

Stroboscopic and other flashing systems that are commonly used do not fulfill the functionality during daytime – they are not visible!

Is incremental construction possible?
Yes. PROGRES MT s.r.o. company offers a combination of all “safe pedestrian crossing” systems.
It is up to the customer and financing whether they have a basic crossing built first and finished later, or if they stay with the basic version should it prove suitable over time.

Is the safe pedestrian crossing system subsidized?
Unfortunately, it is not. Currently, there is no financial support from the side of road managers, even though we have tried to make this point across repeatedly.

Do we need a project in order to build a safe pedestrian crossing?
Yes. We will prepare a project for you upon request.

Is it possible to get a good price?
Yes, it is always a matter of an agreement – it is quite common that customers perform certain works themselves in order to save their funds.

Is it necessary to build a dedicated power supply?
This always depends on conditions in the given terrain, but usually the power is supplied via the public lighting system which is often in close vicinity. The power consumption is minimal and also the short-term power load is not high. Therefore, it is safe to connect our system to the public lighting network.

What happens in the event of a power loss, e.g., during a storm?
Backup battery-powered system guarantees the crossing to run for at least 6 hours. In practice, the system can often run up to 24 hours using the backup power source.

Is it necessary to dig up the road during the construction?
No. The system uses communicates wirelessly, hence it is not necessary to interconnect the two sides of the crossing. The in-road LED lights are built into the upper surface of the road which requires only a thin layer to be removed before the installation and asphalted afterwards. The LED lights are durable so that they are not damaged by winter maintenance vehicles that remove snow from roads!

Technical information - INTRODUCTION

Safe pedestrian crossings represent autonomous traffic systems that serve the purpose of highlighting the crossing and pedestrians passing on it or appearing in its vicinity.

Safe pedestrian crossings fulfill two basic functions:

  1. Lighting and highlighting the pedestrian crossing.
  2. Detection of pedestrians on the crossing an in its vicinity.

The motion detector immediately identifies the event of pedestrian crossing the road and activates the LED lights that notify drivers of coming vehicles. The purpose of safe pedestrian crossings is to give drivers an early warning about the danger of collision with a pedestrian. Also, the aim is to have a psychological effect on driver’s attention. Active LED elements are only turned on if a pedestrian is on the crossing or in its vicinity. If there are no pedestrians on the crossing or in its vicinity, the LED elements are passive and drivers are not notified by flashing.
The system of safe pedestrian crossing works independently of traffic light system and uses own electronics and control unit.

Safe pedestrian crossing augmented with a pedestrian motion detector works on the principle of indication of presence of pedestrians on the crossing and in its vicinity. The system functions on the basis of scientific research that builds on the latest knowledge from the area of psychology. Research shows that drivers become less alert when passing pedestrian crossings that are permanently lit even if no pedestrian is present. The aim of our system is to notify the driver only if a pedestrian is actually detected and warn him about the danger of possible collision with a pedestrian.

If the device does not detect a pedestrian on the crossing or in its vicinity, the LED lights on the CROSSFLASH / ARDOS system are passive and do not flash. Active LED elements of LEVELITE / ARDOS system (LED lights built into the road surface) behave the same way. If the device detects a pedestrian within its range, the CROSSFLASH / ARDOS system will flash lights on a vertical traffic sign. The blinking on the CROSSFLASH / ARDOS system is implemented by orange LED lights D180 of size 180mm.

Upon detecting a pedestrian, in-road LED elements LEVELITE / ARDOS will begin to flash emitting a bright white light of 1Hz frequency. If the pedestrian leaves the detection zone, the device will enter idle state after a preset period of time.

The system of safe pedestrian crossings can be powered via a permanent source (230V) or from public lighting system. The device is running all year round, 24 hours a day. Automatic switching of the crossing lighting is done independently and is usually configured so that it turns on and off along with the public lighting. The crossing is lit with a special light source with asymmetric emissive characteristic and a contrast light color (white).


The electronics of the control unit is augmented by a device that activates the warning lights only if a pedestrian is in the vicinity of the crossing. If no pedestrians are present, the detection device switches the electronics off and the active element (CROSSFLASH / ARDOS a LEVELITE / ARDOS) becomes passive. This way of operation prevents drivers from getting used to the fact that the warning light is constantly flashing regardless of pedestrian presence. The transmission of control signals to the control unit at the other side of the road is facilitated by a remote sensor. Therefore, it is not necessary to bury a control cable below the road or to put it above.

The pedestrian detection system is powered via a permanent power source (230V) or from public lighting system, respectively. The pedestrian detection system is operational all year around, 24 hours a day. It is possible to set the detection zone according to local conditions and actual situation on the spot. The detection cone can reach a distance between 1 and 6 meters.

The CROSSFLASH / ARDOS system is a traffic device consisting of a vertical road sign IP6 which is augmented by two warning LED lights D180 and a control unit with a pedestrian detector.

LEVELITE / ARDOS – active in-road LED elements

Flashing LED lights are built directly into the road (orthogonally to the driving direction) in front of a pedestrian crossing. The warning LED lights built into the road affect drivers’ subliminal perception. Therefore, drivers’ attention is elevated, contributing to safer driving. It is scientifically proven that drivers mostly pay attention to the area in front of them, in the center of their vision angle. The active device featuring white LED elements clearly indicate the area of the crossing even under poor visibility conditions. Built-in LED lights have high luminous output and emit light that does not glare drivers of incoming vehicles. The lights accumulate the light energy into a thin cone and therefore a high intensity light beam is emitted. The installation of LED lights is conducted using special equipment so that the LEVELITE / ARDOS LED elements are inserted in front of a pedestrian crossing. It is possible to install these lights in one direction or in both.

The in-road prvky LEVELITE / ARDOS LED elements can also be installed along railroad crossings (cf. railroad Bratislava – Jarovce - RAILFLASH / ARDOS) or as guiding lighting.

This is a special light device with asymmetric luminous characteristics, which highlights pedestrians moving on the pedestrian crossing – it fulfills the function “to be visible”.

IP6 ZEBRA LIGHT / ARDOS light is active during evening hours. The switching times are synchronized with public lighting.

IP6 ZEBRA LIGHT / ARDOS light device has two main functions:

  1. Light with asymmetric luminous characteristic, i.e., not glaring drivers and at the same time highlighting pedestrians moving on the crossing in a positive contrast
  2. Vertical road signs located at a post with a lighted IP6 symbol

To see and to be visible – those are the main principles of a safe pedestrian crossing. Therefore, PROGRES MT s.r.o. company recommends the installation of active LED elements (CROSSFLASH, LEVELITE) as well as proper lighting of pedestrian crossings. In order to fulfill the latter requirement, we offer a system of special lights with asymmetric luminous characteristic and contrast highlighting of pedestrians on the crossing.
The main purpose is to highlight the crossing itself as well as the passing pedestrian. The highlighting of the pedestrian is done using a light of a different color from surrounding public lighting – a white light from a halogen discharge lamp.
